Ganna: Round Church and Esterházy MausoleumThe today’s neo-Classic building was erected between 1808 and 1818 based on the famous French Charles Moreau’s plans. The church consecrated to the honour of Saint Anne is the smaller replica of the Pantheon in Rome and at the same time the mausoleum of the Esterházy family. The church has a ground plan forming a Greek cross, above which a huge dome can be seen; at the time of its construction it was the biggest dome in the country. 21 steps lead up to its foyer. On its main altar the marble statue of Virgin Mary stands. The statues of saints and the relieves are very precious. In the sub-church the crypt of the Esterházy family can be found. At the entrance a memorial tablet made of oak warns: Memento mori. Remember human that you have been created from dust and you will become dust. In the crypt the family members rest in marble and bronze sarcophaguses, among them is Miksa Esterházy who died in 1883 and on whose tomb a memorial tablet shows that he was the founder of the Hungarian Athletics Club. The mausoleum can be visited after advance booking. |
